Welcome to Advanced Learner Programs (ALPs)
Anne Arundel County Public Schools is dedicated to providing continued support for teachers to deliver appropriately challenging instruction to advanced learners and advanced instructional strategies and opportunities for all learners. Although we are no longer implementing our GT program of old with the support of our Talent Development Teachers, we are delivering advanced mathematics and language arts instruction to all students who are identified as needing advanced instruction in grades K through 5.
We are regrouping for mathematics in order to deliver advanced instruction to those students identified as needing advanced mathematics learning. Partial compacting of the Envisions math curriculum, use of Hands on Equations, implementation of higher order questioning, and partial use of the M3 advanced math curriculum modules are some of the steps in providing the advanced mathematics teaching in grades K – 5.
All elementary schools are implementing the Treasures reading series this year. The Treasures “Beyond” (green) materials do provide some advanced learning opportunities for students identified as needing advanced language arts instruction. However, in order to better meet the needs of our advance learners, we differentiate classroom instruction by offering the identified advanced students opportunities to use Jacob’s Ladder materials, receive higher order questioning/discussion opportunities, participate in advance novel studies, engage in advance writing challenges, and participate in the William and Mary Reading Program. To support our teachers and staff with the implementation of ALPs, several professional development sessions will be offered this year.
I look forward to working with you this year as ALPs is implemented throughout our school. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
Regards,
Susan Bachmann
